The tall large framed showjumping stallion Calvaro Z passed away following a heart attack at the Haras GF in France at the age of 22.

Ridden by three of the Worlds Greatest show jumpers Jos Lansink, John and Micheal Whitaker his show jumping career Calvaro Z is very much worthy of adding to the list of World Class Stallions. In recent years his progeny have become exceedingly fashionable based on the star qualities of his older sons and daughters such as Night Train (Calvaro x Papillon Rouge) Katchina Mail, Ralvesther (Calvaro x Zevenster) who are consistantly demonstrating their brave attitude, carefullness and ability to perform at the highest of levels.

Due to his show jumping commitments Calvaro himself started his stud career late, however, in his first season whilst standing at Zangershiede, he produced 232 foals and in his second season 246. Calvaro was later approved on behalf of the Scottish Sports horse and became a popular sire with Scottish Breeders with a number of his foals topping the grading results and more recently his daughter "Hazel" (Calvaro x Ramiro Z) placing third in the Scottish Sports Horse Loose Jumping Championships in 2009. His progeny are now very much in demand across Europe frequently selected for the PSI and other elite auctions but was very much under utilised by British Breeders as quickly gained a reputation for not always producing the most attractive of progeny and often not with the greatest of hind legs. Nonetheless his progeny often possess the most tremendous of canters and a power to their jump that is frequently unriavaled currently placing Calvaro in 10th position in the WBFSH show jumping sire rankings with and exceptionally high ratio of his sons and daughters consistantly jumping the 1.60m tracks.

Caletto ICalvaro's sire, Caletto 1, was in previous years ranked fifth and it will be interesting to follow Calvaro to see if he reaches the same level of attainment in the future. His mother Deka by Consul herself made breeding history as mother of five approved sons. Caletto I was one of the most successful horses in sport, ridden by Michael Rupling, Caletto 1 jumped at international level with his greatest acheivement winning the individual bronze at the 1982 Dublin World Championships. After his show jumping career lasting five years, the son of Cor de la Bryere had won more than 100 000 D-Mark - more than any other German breeding stallion before him at that time. The most successful son of Caletto I until Calvaro FCS, was Cantus, the father of Calvaro 005 ridden by Willi Melliger.

CalvaroCalvaro was later purchased by Scottish Breeder Nicola Gillespie and John Whitaker the partnership that became (First Choice Stallions) and competed for Great Britain with John in the Sydney Olympics he was later jumped under the title of Virtual Village Calvaro and was later retired to France.

Calvaro's dam Rixa, is a daughter of another top-class sire Capitol I (Capitano). Capitol I has a large number of successful progeny in international showjumping. Particularly noteworthy in his pedigree is Retina (by Ramzes) with whom Fritz Thiedemann achieved great successes decades ago. One of his other accomplished sons in 2000 was "Cento" who won the Aachen Grand Prix, shared team gold in Sydney and only missed an individual medal by one rail.

Calvaro ConformationIf we follow Calvaro FCS's dam's lineage back through we find the influential Farnese son "Fantus" to a beautifully bred Hanoverian female line that carries the blood of Sesam II and Goldfisch II another great influential blood line in Hanoverian performance. Calvaro was 1997 Dutch Champion and came 2nd in the German Classics and Pulsar Crown, in Monterrey and in Valkenswaard, as well as claiming silver for the team at the 1997 Mannheim European Championship. In 1998 Calvaro jumped the Rome World Championship with Jos Lansink and in 1999 Michael Whitaker took over the ride where he competed successfully in The European Championships at Hickstead. He was also a regular member of The Great Britain Nations Cup Team with success at Dublin and Aacen.

The good news is that his frozen semen is still available.
